What is Manual Lymph Drainage (M.L.D)
Manual Lymph Drainage is a specialized massage technique that is performed by a Lymphoedema Therapist.
Lymphoedema is better known to most people as “swelling”. The lymphatic system is supposed to reduce the fluid that leaks out of the blood vessels. However, sometimes the lymphatic system is not working properly. This can be seen post trauma (ankle sprains), surgery (mastectomies where lymph nodes are removed), and after cancer radiation treatments that can affect the lymph nodes.
When there is swelling in an area of the body, blood flow can be reduced and pressure can be placed on nerves creating sensations of pins and needles, aching, throbbing, pain. Often you will see an indentation from a sock or shoe or jewellery. The range of motion of joints can be restricted. The skin is often stretched tightly and there is a feeling of heaviness. The skin can also become dry.
MLD is a gentle form of massage that is used to encourage movement of lymph away from areas of swelling. It can be used in the face, breast, abdomen as well as the limbs.
Connie’s primary goal as a Massage Therapist is to work with you the customer to help improve your overall health and well being and live a better quality of life.
